6. Survivors & Mates Support Network (SAMSN)

Updated: Dec 6, 2024

Unlike my previous posts, this one introduces my upcoming SAMSN’s Eight-week Support

Groups for male survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA).

After nearly two years of anticipation, I stand on the threshold of a journey that both excites and unnerves me. This long-awaited opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about experiences I've closely guarded, sharing and listening in a space where vulnerability is not just accepted but encouraged, is finally within reach. The mix of eagerness and anxiety is palpable as I prepare to navigate this new chapter.

It represents a significant step towards embracing my own story and the stories of others, fostering connections that I've yearned for, yet hesitated to seek out. In this endeavour, I am reminded of the power of shared experiences to heal, connect, and transform us, even as we face the unknown with a blend of hope and apprehension.

The first session is in early May and I will be posting about each - realtime stuff!!! If this is something anyone would like to know more about, I have SAMSN's details below - For survivors and their supporters.

Survivors & Mates Support Network (SAMSN): A Beacon of Hope for Male Survivors

Founded in 2011 by a group of male survivors seeking support for the repercussions of child sexual abuse, the Survivors & Mates Support Network (SAMSN) emerged as a pioneering initiative. Frustrated by the lack of existing support groups, these men took the lead to create what they needed: a platform for male survivors to connect, share, and heal together.

SAMSN introduced an eight-week group program, led by professional counsellors adept in aiding male survivors, offering a secure environment for men to confront and understand the extensive impacts of child sexual abuse. The program’s success has led to its high demand, illustrating the critical need for such supportive spaces.

Since its inception, SAMSN has conducted over 90 group sessions in various locations, including Sydney, regional NSW, Adelaide, and Canberra. The organisation has expanded its support, understanding the nuanced needs of male survivors and the complexities of their recovery process. It now offers ongoing monthly meetings, fostering a continuous support network.

In 2014, acknowledging the compounded difficulties survivors face due to trauma, SAMSN employed professional staff to offer individualised support. This assistance extends to navigating the criminal justice system, seeking redress, and accessing vital services like Centrelink or housing, and finding appropriate counselling.

SAMSN’s commitment to peer support is evident in its structure, integrating peer support workers with professional teams to provide holistic and empathetic assistance to survivors. This approach underscores the transformative power of solidarity and shared experiences in the healing journey of male survivors of child sexual abuse.
